Bird and Float The primary role of the bird is to keep the mainline taught when towed through the water. It is critical that the mainline is fully stretched and branchlines are at their proper lengths for successful fishing. Birds have gone through various design changes throughout the years but the basic principle is a wooden water sled weighted with lead for balance. Improperly designed and unbalanced birds can flop or lose its grip on the water surface, causing the mainline to sag and the baits to lose their action on the water surface.
